Recent Mission Projects - Distant

Blankets and Tools We receive a special offering for this project every year.  With it we buy blankets that are used in disaster areas in this country and around the world.  We also buy tools to help people rebuild their lives after disasters where they have lost everything they own.

Church World Service Kits  Each summer our church gathers items needed for Church World Service (CWS) kits.  We put together health kits, new baby kits, and school kits.  These items are carried to the West Ohio Conference's Festival of Sharing.  From there they are shipped to a CWS warehouse to wait for the next area with a need.  Many of these kits are shipped to areas that experience disasters, like when Hurricane Ike hit the Gulf Coast.

CROP Walk This annual walk is done in cooperation with other Hamilton churches to raise money for Church World Service hunger programs.  This world-wide program works on self-help development, aid to refugees, meeting emergency needs, and eliminating root causes of poverty and powerlessness.  Each walker solicits sponsors who contribute money to CROP.

Henderson Settlement is located in the Appalachian Mountains of southeastern Kentucky.  The many programs at the multi-building facility provide for the many needs in this impoverished area.  Food, clothing, home repairs, tutoring, recreation, and many other programs serve children, youth, adults and the elderly.

Jackson Area Ministry Seed Project  Each Spring we gather packets of garden seeds to be distributed through Jackson Area Ministry (JAM) to needy people in 7 counties of Southeast Ohio.  These people use the seeds to plant gardens, and decrease their food expenses.  JAM also does canning so that people can enjoy home-grown vegetables all year long.

McCurdy School We donate to this United Methodist School operated in Espanola, New Mexico.  A quality education with a Christian emphasis is provided in this underserved area of northern New Mexico.  Elementary through high school students are served, some of whom have to be boarded because of the distances between their homes and the school.  Many of the students are of Native American heritage.

Nothing But Nets is a malaria control program.  Our Vacation Bible School and the congregation both contributed to this project.  With our donations, we buy mosquito nets coated with insecticide for distribution in areas of the world where malaria is a problem.  Millions of these nets have been passed out, primarily to children, many of them in Africa.

Ohio River Valley Children's Ministry is located in Cincinnati, Ohio.  This downtown children's ministry is coordinated by one of our district's churches that was starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel for funds during the recession.  Our church joined many others to help them out with a special injection of funding.

Phone Cards for Military Personnel are provided through our United Methodist Chaplains to military personnel on deployment.  For $4.95 we can provide 120 minutes to someone in the military to use in calling home.

Red Bird Mission  We donate funds to this mission effort located near Beverly, Kentucky a very remote Appalachian area of the state.  The mission operates a K-12 school, a craft store for area people to sell their work, a medical clinic, a farm, greenhouses, and lots of other needed ministries.  They gather used clothing, furniture and food for distribution to those in need.  They host mission teams who come in and rehab housing in the area, and much more.

United Methodist Children's Home is located in Worthington, Ohio.  Troubled youth, often sent by area courts, live on the campus in small group housing.  They get the love and guidance needed to get their lives back on track while attending the accredited school on campus.  We give $5 contributions from our members on the four months each year with a fifth Sunday.
